Chopta Chandrashila Tungnath Trek with Deoriatal
A scenic Himalayan trek in Uttarakhand, combining the beautiful landscapes of Chopta with a visit to Tungnath Temple, one of the highest Shiva temples in the world.
Chopta is a tiny hill station and a part of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, which houses green meadows and dense forest. Situated at a height of 2680 meters above the sea level, the place is considered one of the best locations for camping in the state of Uttarakhand.
Chopta is also the starting point of treks to Tungnath, which is the world’s highest Shiva temple and Chandrashila peak. Often called as the Mini Swtizerland, Chopta is known for its serene beauty of its evergreen meadows and majestic views of valleys and snowcapped peaks. The place is girded by dense forest of pine, deodar and rhododendron and is famous for musk deer and rare species of birds such as Monal.
The other scenic camping destination that we are covering in this trip is Deoriatal. Deoriatal is a pristine lake situated at a height of 2400 meters. The site is best known for the breathtaking views of Chaukhamba peaks and its reflections in the lake.

Drive from Delhi to Sari village
- We leave Delhi in the evening by 21:00 hrs. We take the route to Rishikesh and then continue our mountain journey to Sari village.
- We travel through Kedarnath-Badrinath highway and pass Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath. Amidst the journey, enjoy the views of Alaknanda, Bhagirathi and Mandakini river valley.
Reach Sari and Trek to Deoriatal (3 kms)
- We take a small break at Srinagar and enjoy a piping hot tea. After the break, we continue our journey until we reach our destination, which is Sari.
- Sari is a small village located near Chopta and is the starting point of the trek to Deoriatal. After reaching Sari, we take rest for about 1 hour, do little stretching and get prepared for the trek.
- The trek to Deoriatal is a small hike of about 3 km and takes around 2 hours to reach the lake. The trail is easy and is less tiring. While trekking one can have a look at the peak of Chandrashila. After reaching Deoriatal, enjoy the alluring views of meadows and lake.
- Have your dinner while gazing at the stars. Overnight stay in dome tents.
Trek down to Sari and Trek from Chopta to Chandrashila via Tungnath and back to Chopta.
- Wake up early and enjoy the magnificent views of Chaukhamba and Kedarnath massifs while sunrise. After breakfast, start your downhill trek to Sari. It hardly takes 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the village and then drive to Chopta.
- Wake up and after breakfast. We start your trek to Tungnath & Chandrashila summit with our packed lunch. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is 3.5 km long and further to Chandrashila is 1.5 km. It takes around 4 hours to reach the summit. Amidst the way, explore the world’s highest Lord Shiva temple and also one of the panch kedar temples, which is Tungnath.
- The temple of Tungnath is situated at an altitude of 3680 meters. The trek till Tunganth is easy and the trail comprises of paved path. After Tungnath, the trail gets little tough and steep and it continues till Chandrashila peak, which is the highest point in that vicinity.
Drive back to Delhi.
- We retrace the same route and reach Delhi by evening. Trip Ends. The summit of Chandrashila is standing at an altitude of 4000 meters and offers one of the best views of peaks such as Chaukhamba and Kedarnath.
- One can also have panoramic views of other remarkable peaks such as Trishul, Nanda devi, Shivling, etc. Later, start your downwhill trek to Chopta and overnight stay in guest house at Ukhimath.

- Walking or hiking sandals: Great for camp use, resting your feet, or stream crossings.
- Sneakers: Optional, but useful for travel days or relaxed time around camp.
- Socks: Carry 3 to 5 pairs that are warm, comfortable, and quick-drying.
03 Clothing Layers
- Jacket: A good quality hiking or trekking jacket for layering.
- Pants: Lightweight, quick-drying trekking pants, plus a warm lower layer for colder nights.
- T-shirts and base layers: Carry 3 to 4 warm, comfortable tees along with a long-sleeve layer.
- Thermals and leggings: Two pairs of thermals and warm leggings are ideal for cold mornings and evenings.
- Undergarments: Pack according to your personal requirement.
- Buff or balaclava: Essential for protecting your neck and throat from wind and cold.
- Beanie cap and hiking hat: A beanie helps in cold weather, while a sun hat protects you during the day.
- Gloves: One warm pair is usually enough.
04 Rain Protection
- Raincoat and rain pants: Helpful in changing mountain weather.
- Rain poncho: A practical option during longer spells of rain.
- Rain covers: Carry waterproof covers for both your backpack and daypack, especially for gadgets.
05 Gadgets and Useful Extras
- Trekking poles, mobile phone, camera, and spare batteries.
- Power bank, lightweight flashlight or headlamp, and waterproof ziplock bags for electronics.
- Plug or converter, sunglasses, and a 1 liter water bottle.
- A journal and pen, a good book, and a map or guidebook if you enjoy documenting the journey
06 Hygiene and Toiletries
- Sunscreen with UV protection and lip balm or salve.
- Quick-drying towels, toilet paper, tissues, or wet wipes.
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, mouth freshener, shampoo, deodorant, and talcum powder.
- Biodegradable soap, nail clipper, and any personal daily-use items.
- Sanitary pads or tampons if needed.
07 First Aid and Energy
- Antiseptic wipes or water syringe, butterfly bandages, sterile gauze pads, and elastic bandages.
- Latex gloves, medicines for upset stomach, cold, flu, fever, headache, and basic pain relief.
- ORS sachets, pain relief spray, bug repellent, and any prescription medicines you already use.
- Medicine for high altitude concerns such as Diamox or a similar alternative, only after medical advice.
- Carry some energy bars and non-alcoholic energy drinks for quick support on the trail.
